What Sits Above Your Opening
Stand inside the garage with the door closed and look up. If there is a steel shaft running horizontally across the wall above the opening, with one or two springs wound around it and cables spooling onto drums at each end, you have a torsion system. If instead there are long springs stretched along the horizontal tracks on either side, running parallel to the ceiling and anchored back toward the rear, that is an extension system. Both do the same job, which is to counterbalance the weight of the door so the opener only has to guide it. Neither is a lifting device on its own.
Why the Difference Matters
The two systems fail in different ways and need different clearances. A torsion spring sits in one place and its energy stays contained on the shaft, which is part of why it has become the standard on newer doors. An extension spring stretches and relaxes with every cycle, and if it breaks without a containment cable threaded through it, pieces can travel. That containment cable is the first thing worth checking on an older extension setup. Headroom is the other difference: a torsion shaft needs space above the opening that some older garages simply do not have.
Signs That a Spring Has Failed
The classic sign is a bang loud enough to be heard inside the house, followed by a door that will not lift. On a torsion system you can often see a gap of an inch or two in the coil where it separated. On an extension system the spring may be hanging visibly slack or in two pieces along the track. Less obvious symptoms come first: a door that feels heavier than usual on the release, one side lifting ahead of the other, or an opener that strains on the way up and slams on the way down. Those are worth acting on before the failure.
Cycle Life Rather Than Years
Springs are rated in cycles, not in years, and one cycle is one full open and close. That matters because two identical doors can be at completely different points in their life depending on how the household uses them. Where the garage is the everyday entrance and the door runs five or six times a day, a standard-rated spring gets used up quickly. Higher-cycle springs are available and are worth asking about at replacement time, but they have to be correctly matched to the door weight rather than simply fitted because they sound better.
Converting From One System to the Other
Owners of older doors sometimes ask about converting an extension setup to torsion. It can be a sensible upgrade where the headroom exists and the hardware plan is right, and it usually gives smoother, quieter travel. It is not automatically better for every garage, and it should never be sold purely on the age of what is there now. The question to ask is what the conversion actually solves at your opening, and whether a properly specified repair achieves the same practical result for less disruption.
What You Can Safely Look At
From outside the door’s travel path, note whether the door is open, closed or hanging at an angle, whether you heard a bang, and whether the opener was running at the time. A visible gap in a coil is useful information to pass on. What you should not do is stand beside the spring, test the door’s weight by lifting it, or pull the emergency release while the door is partly raised. A failed spring leaves the door unsupported in ways that are hard to judge from the ground.
